Pray at the Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan

The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a massive Mamluk era mosque and madrassa located near the Citadel in Cairo. It was constructed by the Mamluk ruler, Sultan Hassan Bin Mohammed bin Qala’oun between 1356 AD and 1363 AD and was designed by Muhammad ibn Bailick al- Muhseini. Sultan Hassan was assassinated in 1391 before two years of the completion of the construction. This is a big mosque which is 150 meters long and 36 meters height, covering an area of 7,906 sq m. The height of the walls is 36 m and its tallest minaret is 68 m. On the four sides of the courtyard there are sitting rooms (liwan) which consists of hanging lamp chains and red and black rims. These liwans also serves as a sanctuary comprising the mihrab and minbar. The mosque consists of monumental staircase, the cornices and the entrance. This was used as a mosque and religious Muslim school to teach hafi’I, Maliki, Hnafi and Hanbali. At a time the mosque can house 400 students. Citadel is a place which was used for festivals and sporting programs like Polo during the 14th and the 15th centuries. On the right side of the minbar there is a mausoleum of Sultan Hassan which is encrusted by a restored dome and is a place to stay in prayers.

How to Reach:
By Metro: Nearest metro station is Sadat station. From there it is about 3.2 km to our destination.
By Bus: Take the bus number 400 from Cairo which takes 15 minutes to reach the Mosque.

Adults: 25 EGP
Students: 15 EGP

Timings: Opens from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm every day.
