The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in South Africa it was once a fort, but today it functions as a showcase of the Cape’s early days. It was built by Jan van Riebeeck and the Dutch East India Company, the building was completed in 1679. The building is restored to its original décor but now functions as a museum. One of the major attraction of the museum is the William Fehr Collection, comprising paintings and decorative arts it is housed partly in the Castle of Good Hope museum, and partly in Rust enVreugd –another historical house and museum in the city.

The pieces of this collection, including furniture, oil paintings and antique from China, which were collected by businessman William Fehr, then sold or donated to the South African government during the first half of the 20th Century

Entry Fee:

• Adults: R 30 • Pensioners (SA card holders only): R 15 • Children/Students (5-16 yrs): R 15 • Booked School Groups: R 5

• Go on a Guided Tour between Monday and Saturday at 11 h 00, 12 h 00 and 14 h 00 (no tours on Sundays). • The Key Ceremony is performed Monday to Friday at 10 h 00 and 12 h 00, followed by the firing of the Signal Cannon. • Book a romantic horse and carriage ride. Rides take place daily at 10 h 30, 12 h 45 and 14 h 45 and take about an hour. Sunset rides are also offered. Bookings compulsory.
