Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water… South Africa has an incredibly diverse shark population. A quarter of the world’s shark species (98 to be precise) dwell in South African waters and around 40 of these call the waters around Cape Town home.

Adrenalin enthusiasts will want to make the 175-kilometer (110-mile) journey to Gansbaai, the white shark capital of the world. You will need your scuba gear to climb into the cage of danger if you dare! Allow time for a 1.5 hour drive out to Gansbaai with your chosen company. Upon arrival at Gansbaai, a nice breakfast awaits. However, it’s recommended not to have a heavy morning meal before heading out to sea; depending on weather conditions, it can be quite a rocky ride.

After an extensive safety briefing and QUESTIONS session, comes the show time! The group is finally taken underwater for the near death experience.

Although nothing beats the ‘real thing’ - a genuine up-close-and-personal encounter with the great white sharks from within the cage - there is also the possibility to tag along for the boat ride without actually diving. For those who want to keep the great whites farther than arm’s length away, the upper deck of the boat is the perfect spot for a spectacular viewing spot.
