The town of Bagamoyo, Tanzania, was founded at the end of the 18th century. The buildings are restricted to Swahili construction and serve as a backdrop to the slave trade of East Africa. Bagamoyo has a resemblance to other East coast towns such as Mombasa, Pale and Lamu in Kenya. It has narrow streets and has grand houses built by wealthy merchants. When you visit here, you will get to see ornately carved front doors, massive plain outer walls and galleries. Since the Germans had arrived here in the 19th century, their imprint is also found in the architectural style of the city. With this confluence, the heritage of Bagamoyo is made absolutely unique. These Swahili buildings constructed here from sand mortar and local coral stone are very porous and so they are nature damaged owing to damp climate and rains. If you want to eat here, there are many places wherein local dishes and ugali can be eaten. Some famous restaurants include Poa Poa restaurant which is definitely a good place to drink and eat and New Top Life Inn which is a good place to eat omelets, chips and chicken.
