This market is located opposite the Village Museum and it’s always packed with carvers and vendors. In this market, you would find a large co-op of around 200 carvers who are specializing in Makonde carvings. Other crafts and arts are also found here, such as the adorable and beautiful Tinga Tinga paintings. Keep in mind that you don’t have to give in quickly to the vendors and fight a lot for the prices. You will just love this place. This is a very cheap place for buying souvenirs and wood carving. A real bargain can be done if one is good at negotiating prices. It is better to use TZH than to use USD. Every time you visit here you will find something exciting and new. The sales people here are very friendly.

The visitors can make some efforts and speak in Swahili if they can as the locals would really appreciate it. This is really a good local experience and a good way to learn the local language and culture. The carvers here are devoted to craft and years are spent in developing this style. Their equipment include sandpaper, small tools and shoe polish to polish and seal the wood. Intricate carvings can be seen here like a ‘tree of life’ which can be as tall as a man, common ritual masks, chests, bowls and figures. However, you can purchase everyday items too like beautiful ornaments, salad forks and jewelry. The market usually closes early in the evening and this is a good time for getting a bargain.
