Visit the Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine is centred in Shibuya. This is the famous Shinto shrine, devoted to the Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken. The building was destroyed during the period of the World War II and was reconstructed in the year 1958. The area is around 7000,000 square meters. It has an evergreen forest which consists of around 12000 trees with different species. These trees were donated by the people of Japan. There are two gardens namely the inner and the outer gardens. From the inner garden one can see the O-torii, the biggest torii of Japan which is 12 meters high.

The outer garden showcases the life of the king through different paintings. The gallery comprises of the sanctuary were the emperor used to spend his time. Meiji Jingu Treasure House is on the northern side of the shrine. Here the occasions like weddings takes place. In the wedding the bride wears a white Kimono and hood while the groom is dressed up in black robe. The maids and priests wear the traditional dresses. Hatsu-mode is a popular festival held in the shrine during the month of January. At this time the area is crowded by around 2-3 million people.

Timings: Opening hours is from sunrise to sunset on all the days.
