Wat Pho or simply Wat Phra Chetuphon is the oldest temple in Bangkok which was constructed in the year 1788 by King Rama III. This temple is called as the birthplace of Thai massage. The temple houses the largest Buddha image in Bangkok named ‘The Reclining Buddha’. This Reclining Buddha idol is about 46 meters long and 15 meters high. The body of the idol is covered with gold and his feet are 5 meters long decorated in mother-of-pearl. The Wat Pho temple is divided into two parts namely the northern and the southern walled compounds. In the northern walled compound there is a Thai massage school and on the southern walled compound one can witness the Buddhist monastery. One can try for bringing good luck into their lives by purchasing a bowl of gold coins available at the entrance of the hall and can drop the pennies in the 108 bronze bowls lined across the walls. This makes a wonderful ringing sound. This money is used for helping the monks and for the renovation work of the temple. It’s a rule of the temple that all the visitors much come in full clothing without exposed shoulders or skin above the knee.
