In the 9th century the Bunratty Castle originally was a Viking trading camp. The first defensive fortress with an earthen mound with a wooden tower top was built by Robert De Muscegros, a Norman. Later Thomas De Clare built the first stone castle during the time when Burantty became a larger town of about 1,000 residents. There was a war between the Normans and the Irish, the Irish attacked and won over the castle which then remained forever in the hands of the Irish.
