Artis Royal zoo, also known as Natura Artis Magistra was founded in 1838 and it is located in the center of the city.It is considered as the largest museum with most visitors in the whole of Netherlands. The zoo is named as Artis because the three names Artis, Magistra and Natura are written on its three gates. Artis is a combination of an aquarium, a library, a botanical garden and a museum that consists of variety of aquatic fishes, around 20000 books, 250 varieties of trees and 900 animal species respectively. Most of the animals here are at the stage of extinction. The botanical garden provides the information on diversity of plants. The major attractions of the Artis Zoo are Lemurs, Sea Lions, Savannah, Gorilla house, Butterfly pavilion, Aquarium, forest house etc. The park of the zoo also accommodates small cafes and restaurants. Apart from this there are 27 historic and monumental buildings in the zoo. This amazing place is a combination of both natural and cultural heritage.

How to reach:
By Metro: Nearest metro station is Nieuwmarkt. Get the metro 53 from central station Gaasperlas and 54 from Central station Gein.
By Tram: Take tram 14 from dam square or tram 9 from central station.
By Bus: Get the bus number 9 from CS Tram Oostzijde, Amsterdam.
