Explore the Wieliczka Salt Mine

Wieliczka lies 14 km Southeast of Krakow and is quite renowned for its deep salt mine. It has chambers and pits and everything that is found in the depths is carved by hand from salt blocks. There are many tunnels and are distributed over 9 levels and the deepest one is around 327m underground. 22 chambers are connected to galleries and is open as a museum for public. This mine is quite famous for health giving properties. There is an underground sanatorium which is 135m deep and wherein treatment of chronic allergic diseases is possible with overnight stays. There are guided tours that can be arranged in 3 levels and one can enjoy the walk through an eerie landscape. Some are made into figures and altarpieces or chapels while some are adorned with monuments and statues. Some underground lakes are found as well. In the entry fees, visit to Krakow Saltworks Museum is included. There are 14 chambers here and the tour ends on the 3rd level of the mine. However, till then many visitors become over-salted. There is a mining lift that would take you back to the real world. The tour takes around 2 hours. Comfortable shoes should be worn as one has to walk for around 2km. The temperature is around 14 degrees.
