If you have never seen a heritage theatre before, thank your stars you are in Auckland, and go to see the beauty of The Civic, originally built in early 1900’s and renovated a hundred years later to create what it is today. It is a splendid structure with a capacity of seating over 2300 people. Some of the works of architecture can be directed to having Indian hues, the Buddhas in the main lobby, the minarets, etc and it attracts many tourists as it is the few atmospheric theatres in the world today.

Today The Civic hosts popular bands and live performances, and events like the New Zealand Film Festival. It has a ceiling that looks like a dome which is open to the evening sky which is a clever illusion. You may want to go to watch one of the many historical as well as fantasy driven short films at The Civic. For example, The Mighty Civic; which is part history part fiction, and The War Years which showcases the wartime experiences of American troops in New Zealand. You may also enjoy the winter garden depending on which season you are going in.

Timings: Depends on the show, but usually shows are run between 7 and 8.30 pm in the evening.

Tickets: Price varies according to the shows.

Location: The Civic, Corner Queen Street & Wellesley Street, Auckland.
