The Gothic Basílica del Voto Nacional, built over several eras stands high on a hill in the northeastern part of the old town. Instead of the usual gargoyles, native animals of Ecuador-turtles and iguanas project from the church’s side. The best part is the basilica’s towers, the ascent requires to cross a shaky wooden board inside the main roof and climbing steep stairways and ladders to the top. The spiral staircase and three sets of ladders into and above the clock tower can also be climbed.

The small side chapel, La Capilla de Sacramento features a mosaic tile floor, painted walls, columns, and a beautiful high altar of Mary. There’s café just outside the church and a snack bar on the tower’s 4th floor. Most people, however, come here for the outstanding aerial views of the Old City and to see La Virgen de Quito in the distance. Walk by the basilica at night to see this unique landmark magnificently lit with blue and green lights.
