Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in northwest of Arequipa. This is noted as one of the most visited attraction of the city. It is a colourful Andean valley with pre-Inca roots, and the towns were founded in Spanish colonial times which are still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. Today also, these local people still maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.

This Canyon serves as a home to the Andean condor, giant hummingbird, Andean goose, Chilean flamingo, and mountain caracara. Animals include vizcacha, a rabbit-sized relative of the chinchilla, zorrino, deer, fox, and vicuña, the wild ancestor of the alpaca. The Archaeological sites include the caves of Mollepunko above Callalli where rock art, the mummy of Paraqra, the Fortaleza de Chimpa, a reconstructed mountaintop citadel that looks down on Madrigal; ruins of pre-Hispanic settlements throughout the valley; and many others.

How to reach: The ride from Arequipa to Cruz del Condor inside the canyon will take approximately three to four hours, including stops along the way. "
